I fell in love with this little gem. "Niner-romeo-romeo" may be a bit difficult to say on the radio, but the airplane is anything but difficult to fly. Sure, she has her quirks as any older aircraft would; radios are a bit wonky and you can't hear what you're transmitting, but don't let that stop you from renting her! She turns right over as soon as you hit the starter, purring like a kitten. Power comes on smoothly and there is plenty of it for a 160HP 'Hawk. It tracks straight and true when trimmed properly, and it just floats along happily at 44kias without a single complaint. All of the avionics are operational, if not a bit quirky. The PTT is on the bottom of the yoke facing the firewall, which prompts a pinky transmission if you're not paying attention, and there are three NAVCOMMs, the procedure for swappying between 2 and 3 is a little odd, but easy enough to remember once it's explained. The checklist for the aircraft is a little dated and in need of a rewrite, however this doesn't cause any appreciable negative impact on flying the aircraft. If I'm ever in the Chicago area again, I would go out of my way to fly N969RR again, she was that much of a joy to fly!
CFI Colin was friendly and professional. I liked the 9RR.
Funky comm stack, but great, well-maintained plane that flies nicely.
